How to Interpret a DXDIAG Report
and Troubleshooting Steps for Morrowind

In this document, everything in grey is original by me.  Comments contributed by others are in gold with their name in red.  This document is intended for everyone who wants to self-diagnose or help others diagnose any hardware or software issue with Morrowind (PC version).  It may seem daunting due to its size, but if you have any questions or problems not covered in this FAQ, please feel free to start a new thread in the Elder Scrolls forums.

The most common issues with the game itself are mentioned in the General section below.  It is, of course, not all-inclusive.  If you’re having an issue with Morrowind that is not covered in this FAQ, please visit the official Bethesda Support page and search for your issue there first.  For the PC version, be sure to select Morrowind in the drop-down box.  The “Morrowind” selection also includes Tribunal and Bloodmoon issues as well.  If after searching the official support pages and this document you’re still having a problem, please visit the forums.

First off, here is my wording on how to request a dxdiag report from someone at the forums:

Can you please post a dxdiag report of the affected computer?

It's best to do this right after a fresh restart, before you load up any programs.

Click Start, then Run.  Type dxdiag and click OK.

Wait for the little progress bar at bottom-left to finish, and then click Save All Information.

Give it a name and location (default is DxDiag.txt on the Desktop).

Then open that file (locate it and double-click on it) and copy and paste its entire contents to a message here.

Don't worry about the size, we know it's big. :)

colin lynch: Where to find the dxdiag:

Press the Start button, select Run, and type 'dxdiag' without the quotation marks, and the program will execute.

If you are asked to post this report, restart your computer, follow the above, then wait for the loading bar on it to finish, then press 'Save all". The default result will save a file called Dxdiag to the desktop. Stick to this, so you don't lose the file.

Open the document by double-clicking on it, once it is open, press Ctrl + A and then Ctrl + c. "Add Reply to your thread in the Hardware forum and click in the reply box to have the text-cursor appear and press Ctrl + v.

If you folowed the steps correctly, the dxdiag report should be pasted in full into the reply. You can now press "Add reply".

For a self-diagnosis, generate the report and just open it up to view the information.

Secondly, I have included a copy of a real dxdiag report we can look at.  A complete, unmodified version is posted at the bottom of this page; however, as we do each section, it will be copied into that section.

General

For maximum performance, Morrowind runs best on a computer that has at least 512 MB of RAM (1 GB or more is preferred, to help reduce CTD’s), has an NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 or higher or ATI RADEON 9200 or higher video card (anything higher is wasted in Morrowind, unless you want to force Anti-Aliasing or Anisotropic Filtering in your video card driver), and as much CPU (processor) power as you can throw at it.  To my knowledge, the fastest processor family available is the Intel Core 2 Duo series, which fits on the Socket 775 platform.  Morrowind leans much more heavily on the processor than any other component in your system; therefore, the faster the CPU*, the higher your frame rate will be, as long as the RAM and video card are higher than a minimum, outlined above.  However, Morrowind does not require high frame rates because it’s not a First Person Shooter; anything 25 FPS or higher is very good for Morrowind.  To help keep your frame rates higher than any minimum you want, I recommend using the Morrowind FPS Optimizer, which adjusts your view distance and AI distance to help keep your FPS within a certain range.

* The “faster CPU” part takes a bit of explaining.  Nowadays, processors from both Intel and AMD are made so that they offer higher performance at a lower clock speed.  For example, an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Venice core) runs at 1.8 GHz, but as its name implies, it offers the performance of a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4.  (PLEASE do NOT call that a 3 GHz AMD processor!  In fact, no AMD processor on the planet runs at 3 GHz, as of 19-Dec-06.)

Yasgur: It probably wouldn't hurt to have the system requirements repeated.

The minimum specifications are:

* Windows Me/98 128MB RAM

* Windows XP/2000 256MB RAM (Windows NT NOT supported)

* 500mhz Intel Pentium III, Celeron, or AMD Athlon processor.

* 8x CD/DVD-ROM Drive

* 1 GB free hard disk space

* Windows swapfile

* DirectX 8.1 (included)

* 32MB Direct3D Compatible Video card and DirectX 8.1 compatible driver

* DirectX 8.1 Compatible Sound Card

* Keyboard, Mouse

See the Display Devices section below for information about the *real* minimum requirement for the video card.

colin lynch: The minimum requirements are posted [here], if any of the minimum

requirements are not met, you do NOT meet them. There isn't 'near enough'

gr471: For those with [Intel] integrated graphics, you can go Here to check if your

chipset will run the game. […] Note that just because that list says you can run the game, doesnt

mean you can run it well.  Use the tweaks in the pinned threads at the

top of [the Morrowind Hardware/Software] forum to increase your performance.

Yasgur: Then there's error messages.

An error "Chunk size 10 too big" when starting Morrowind.

An error message about Cyclic Redundancy Check or CRC appears when installing or starting the program.

I am getting an error, "Font 0 not found" when I try to run Morrowind.

I am getting an error, "Render Creation Failed" when I try to launch Morrowind.

Morrowind is crashing the desktop when the "Initializing Data" message appears.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other problems

When killing the Dark Brotherhood NPC Dandras Vules, the text keeps scrolling!

Odd things happen when I ALT-Tab out of Morrowind.

Is there any way to tell the difference between the North American and European version of Morrowind?

One or all of my menus in Morrowind have disappeared.

How do I set the Windows Desktop to the True Color 32-bit option?

A message, "Could not find the movie file bethesda logo.bik on the CD" appears when starting Morrowind.

Type9: Just so you know, take this error with a grain of salt. This actually happens too when someone is running a no cd hack. Because the movies are stored on the CD, so when you run MW without it, it cannot

find it. I have never heard of anyone messing around with the MW movies, and no mods do that either.

Yasgur: There's a lot more available, but most is rare, repetitive or doesn't go far enough.

Yasgur (originally plmills): (this is referring to the inability to bring up the game’s developer console (~ key) on a system running Windows XP Media Center Edition) I have discovered, via further experimentation, that the problem was not with the keyboard itself. My original keyboard now works fine, bringing up the console in Morrowind as expected.

The problem turned out to be with the drivers loaded when the USB-based Microsoft infrared remote control (MIRC) receiver is attached (remember, I'm using Windows Media Center edition). These drivers load under the "Keyboards" node of the device manager device tree, so I assume the MIRC device uses some kind of keyboard API to do its stuff.

In any case, detaching the MIRC and uninstalling the three devices associated with it in the device manager restores proper keyboard operation in Morrowind.

Lag issues: If your keyboard and/or mouse are responding very slowly, particularly while indoors, it is most likely because the music volume has been turned all the way down.  To fix this, simply move the volume slider slightly to the right if you don’t want to hear the music (it does get boring after a while).  If that doesn’t work, go into your Morrowind.ini file, located in the Morrowind program folder, and lower the Max FPS value to 60 or, ideally, the vertical refresh rate of your monitor at the resolution you play Morrowind at.  And if that still doesn’t work, get a program called RivaTuner and use it to lower the Prerender Cache value to 0 (the default is 3).  To get to this option, after starting RivaTuner, look on the Main tab in the “Driver settings” section for a little button to the right of the word Customize (the button has a triangle on it).  Click that button, and then click the second icon in the popup (labeled DirectDraw and Direct3D Settings).  Click the VSync tab, and the “Prerender limit” value is there.

This section contains a basic description of the system.  Points of interest:

Operating System – This is necessary to know so you can download the proper driver for your system.

colin lynch: You'll be running a version of windows if you're following this. If you're running XP, Service Pack 2 is the latest as of this posting. Windows 2000, then it's service pack 4.

System Manufacturer and System Model – Many times, this can contain information about the make and model of the system.  This example doesn’t really give that information, but sometimes it’s important because some types of drivers can only be obtained from the system or motherboard manufacturer’s web site instead of a chipset site such as Intel or NVIDIA.  I wouldn’t rely too much on this information in your dxdiag report – if you have a self-build, you need to know what make and model your motherboard is, and if you have a laptop or pre-built desktop computer from companies like Dell, eMachines, HP, etc., it’s better to use the model number that’s printed on your computer (usually on the front panel), as that’s more likely to be accurate.

colin lynch: If you are running a laptop, do not look to the manufacturer of each specific hardware to find drivers, look for drivers by the maker of your laptop, found in the first section of the dxdiag report. (This applies mostly to the chipset, video and sound card drivers.)

Memory – This shows the amount of physical memory in the system.  Morrowind seems to work best with at least 512MB to 1024MB (1 GB).

Page File – Morrowind makes heavy use of the CPU; therefore, the less you have loaded in memory, the better, in the sense that fewer background programs would be less likely to take processing cycles away from Morrowind.  The “Page File” line is a misnomer – it is actually referring to Virtual Memory, which is the combination of your page file(s) and your physical memory.  The Used value (212MB here) should be as low as possible; on Windows XP, it should be ideally lower than 170 MB after a fresh restart.  The Available should be >1024MB if possible.  Used + Available = Total virtual memory.  Total virtual memory - Memory + ~99 = approximate Page File size.  Page File size should be at least 1.5x Memory (per Microsoft’s defaults) but can be no more than 4095 MB (this is a limitation of 32-bit versions of Windows).

To adjust your page file settings, on Windows XP, locate your My Computer icon (it’s usually on your desktop or in your Start menu), right-click it, click Properties, then click the Advanced tab, then the Settings button under Performance, then the Advanced tab, and finally the Change button near the bottom.  If you have more than just a C: drive, you can put your page file on any other partition you want.  Ideally, if you have two physical hard drives, Windows should be installed on the first drive and your page file should be on the first (or only) partition on the second drive.  NOTE: Make sure you click Set after making changes to each drive, or your changes will NOT be saved!

HeyYou: Page file usage, lower the better. To reduce the clutter of "stuff" starting with windows:

Click on Start, then Run. In the window that pops up, type in: msconfig then click OK.

Go to the startup tab, and turn off (uncheck) EVERYTHING! Except the logitek mouse software, if you are using a logitek mouse with more than three buttons.

Click ok, and reboot when prompted.

Also, for the real resource grubbers out there, me included..... XP Services are another big resource hog. Here is a good site to see what service you actually need.

DO NOT use the services tab in MSCONFIG for this, go to Control Panel, Administrative tools, Services. Using msconfig for this purpose has a tendency to cause some odd behavior.

CCNA: In this discussion, we will only reccomend non Microsoft Services to be disabled. Way too many things to go wrong if you disable the wrong Microsoft Service

The biggest worry is background apps, those are what really causes problems with the games.

HeyYou: In some cases, it is fairly obvious that the MS service is not needed. For instance, wireless zero configuration, on a machine with no wireless card. There are others out there as well. This is an operation that can be fraught with peril, but, if handled correctly, can noticably improve performance, certainly not to be undertaken by the faint hearted, but still a source of some "free" resources. The page I referred to has suggestions, including: "if in doubt, leave it alone." There are other pages out there that are even more imformative, but this one was in a good format, and I thought, pretty good. Perhaps some SEVERE

warnings about the possible consequences/disclaimer as opposed to just not doing it at all?

For the best tweaking Windows XP tweaking available, I also recommend the vast majority of the advice on the Optimize XP site.

DirectX Version – Version 8.1 or higher is required for Morrowind, but it should be the latest for the best benefit of all of your games (version 9.0c, December 2006 update as of this writing).

colin lynch: At the time of this posting DirectX 9.0c is the latest version out - all versions are backward compatible. Morrowind does not require 9.0c, but upgrading if you don't have it is worthwhile anyways. This can be be downloaded directly from Microsoft.

This section contains anything that dxdiag sees as a problem.  Some examples include whether a particular file is out of date (the fix here is to reinstall or upgrade DirectX), or if Direct3D is not available (the fix would be to upgrade the Display driver or the video card itself).  Any problem listed here should be attended to, and will usually cause Morrowind and other games to not function correctly.  DirectX (web download version) is available from here.

None of these should have anything but a zero in the first column (as shown here) and none should say (debug) in the last column.  If they are, this could be a potential source of instability for Morrowind.  And besides, debug mode can slow things down and is intended only for software developers to help them debug their games or applications.

This is one of the most important sections to pay attention to.  This shows what video card(s) and video card driver is present on the system.

If most of this information is blank or missing, and the DxDiag Notes section shows that Direct3D functionality is not available, then the video card driver either is not installed, or it is not installed correctly.  There is a way to tell what manufacturer the GPU is by looking in the System Devices section.

Morrowind requires a video card (or even integrated graphics) that is capable of hardware DirectX 7 support.  This means that it needs to support 32-bit color.  If the video card properties do not show 32-bit as an option (24-bit is not enough), then the video card cannot run Morrowind.  The minimum requirements for Morrowind also state that the video card needs 32 MB of video RAM.  I have heard of people saying that they got their 16 MB video cards (NVIDIA RIVA TNT2’s, I think) to work, though, so take that with a grain of salt.

If the GPU is on an AGP or PCI Express card, the AGP Status needs to say Enabled for maximum performance (this is called AGP Texture Acceleration in the dxdiag tool itself; it is now a misnomer because it also refers to texture acceleration in PCI Express cards, too).  If it is not saying Enabled, then usually you will need to either reinstall your video card driver, or install or update the chipset driver.  Refer to the System Devices section below to find out what chipset you have.

colin lynch: “AGP Status: Enabled” This line is useful too. If you have an AGP graphics card, yet this is disabled, there is a problem. To enable this, run dxdiag, go to the Display tab and press enable next to AGP texture acceleration.

With any video card, DDraw Status and D3D Status need to say Enabled; no exceptions.

colin lynch: “Driver Version: 6.14.0010.8185 (English)” This is your video driver. The driver version is found by looking at the last four digits, and putting a decimal place after the first two. In my case, I am running the Nvidia 81.85 drivers. (Note that this applies only to the NVIDIA driver.)

Morrowind is notorious for having problems with the latest display driver on not-so-new video cards.  Here is an outline of what I think the best driver versions for the various cards are.

Time sensitive data: (as of 12/21/06):

NVIDIA GPU’s: The RIVA TNT2 card seems to work best with the 30.82 driver, especially if you’re trying to load TESCS (TES Construction Set) and see nothing but a grey window.  The GeForce 2/3 series seems to work best with the 45.23 driver; the GeForce 4 series cards work best on the 45.23 or 66.93 driver; the GeForce FX 5xxx series and 6200 series cards work best on the 66.93 or 81.98 driver; the GeForce 6xxx series seems to work best on the 84.21 driver; and the GeForce 7xxx and 8xxx series seem to work best on the latest version, 93.71.

ATI GPU’s: This game will run on a Rage 128/128 Pro/Fury chipset; the latest driver (final version 6.13.3279) is recommended.  On ATI RADEON GPU’s, the 9xxx series (9000, 9200, etc.) and lower cards seem to work best with the Catalyst 5.1 driver, but the Catalyst 6.3 driver is also okay (don’t go higher than that, though).  The Xxxx series (X300, X600, etc.) ATI cards seem to work best with the Catalyst 5.12 driver, and again, the Catalyst 6.3 driver is also okay.  The ATI X1xxx series (X1300, X1900, etc.) seem to work best with the latest Catalyst driver, which is 6.12 as of this writing.  However, if you have any weird problems with an X1xxx series card, you may want to roll back to the 6.3 driver; ATI did something to the 6.4 driver that Morrowind doesn’t seem to agree with on some cards.  Also, and especially on the older cards, try not to get any Catalyst driver that has the Catalyst Control Center (CCC).  The CCC relies on Microsoft .NET Framework, which is a huge memory/resource hog.  It’s better to use the ATI Control Panel if you can help it.  (Note that the X1xxx series requires the CCC to be installed and the ATI Hotkey Poller service to be Enabled and started in order to reach full GPU speed.  This is not so important in Morrowind, but it IS important in other, newer games.)

Intel integrated GPU’s: The Intel integrated graphics adapters are not supported (they’re not on the official support list); however, the Intel 845 series and higher do seem to run the game just fine.  The 810/815 adapters will not, as they only support 24-bit color.  These adapters seem to run Morrowind best using a driver version other than 14.19 or 14.20 (these two versions cause crashes and other problems in Morrowind).  I usually recommend using the 14.18 driver, since we haven’t had much feedback on the driver versions after 14.20.  Note that the 915 and later graphics adapters will not show the AGP Status as Enabled for some reason, but the rest usually do.  Because they’re Integrated, AGP status does not necessarily need to say Enabled for them to function correctly.

This just about covers the most frequently seen video card chipsets.

colin lynch: “Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor” If your line says this, then you don’t have monitor drivers installed. Generally, the Microsoft one is fine, but if you have any odd issues, or you want your colours to reflect the real world even more accurately, then find the drivers for your monitor from your monitor manufacturer. This is very very very unlikely to cause any game errors.

This is another important section.  Morrowind requires a sound card with properly installed drivers – no exceptions. (Okay, one exception – you can disable sound in the INI file, but you need to rename the Music folder, too.  This information is thanks to Timeslip.)  Generally speaking, the more up-to-date the driver, the better things will run (not just Morrowind).  Like the Display Devices section, if this section looks empty, then either the sound card is missing, or the drivers are not installed or not installed correctly.  And, just like the video card, there is a way to tell the manufacturer of the sound card by looking in the System Devices section.

Several things to note about this section – Default Sound Playback should say Yes on the primary sound card.  Make sure it does not say Yes on anything that looks like a speakerphone or modem.  The system can have more than one sound card, but Morrowind only uses the one marked as the Default, and having more than one sound card should not cause a problem.  Also, if Driver Attributes shows a debug version, that can cause instability in Morrowind.  It should say Final Retail for maximum stability.  And if there are any weird sound problems, HW Accel Level should be lowered two notches to Basic.  This would help the onboard/integrated sound chips the most.  Sometimes, though, the 3D Sound option can be toggled between Hardware and Software to fix some sound issues (this option is in-game, under Options, under the Audio tab).

Also, it is worth noting that most onboard sound solutions (such as Realtek or SoundMax) require more CPU power to process and output the sound.  This means that, because Morrowind is so CPU-intensive by itself, your frame rate will suffer as a result.  A sound card that fits into a PCI slot has its own DSP, and that takes a noticeable load off of the CPU.  By switching from onboard sound to a sound card of any kind, many people will realize a 5-20% increase in frame rate.  A sound card can be had for very cheap; I usually recommend at least a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 series card (but not the Audigy LS, which uses the same chipset and driver as the Live! series).  (This may not apply to all integrated sound; the integrated gigabit Ethernet controller in the NVIDIA nForce3 chipset seems to be better than any PCI gigabit Ethernet PCI card, at least in theory, so I assume the integrated NVIDIA sound might be better than most integrated sound.)

The Sound Capture Devices, DirectMusic, DirectInput Devices, USB Devices, Gameport Devices, PS/2 Devices, the DirectPlay sections

There is just about nothing worth noting in any of these sections.

There is usually nothing worth noting about this section; however, sometimes it reveals a problem with a CD driver, or disk space running low, things of that nature.

The System Devices Section

--------------

System Devices

--------------

This section tells you exactly what hardware is in the system and what driver file(s) is/are used for that hardware.  It also duplicates many of the devices you saw in the previous sections, but only telling you all of the files that make up that driver and little else.  This can also indicate if the driver for that hardware is installed correctly.

Most importantly, it can indicate what chipset the system is using, and the status of the driver.  Here is a sample chipset driver (an AGP controller):

     Name: NVIDIA nForce3 250 AGP Host to PCI Bridge

Device ID: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_00E2&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_A2\3&13C0B0C5&0&58

   Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\nv_agp.SYS, 4.12.0001.0436 (English), 4/2/2004 15:40:00, 21760 bytes

   Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\NVCOG.DLL, 1.00.0000.0015 (English), 4/2/2004 15:40:00, 32256 bytes

Let’s take a closer look here.  As you can see, by its Name, this is an NVIDIA nForce3 chipset.  I know that an nForce3 chipset has only AGP and not PCI Express.  The first driver file, nv_agp.SYS, is the AGP GART driver.  The AGP GART driver enables the faster transfer speed for texture data allowed by the AGP bus.  If this driver is not installed correctly, the “AGP Status” back in the Display Devices section will not be enabled.

Also, one important thing here is the Device ID.  In most cases, you can’t tell exactly what device something is by looking at that string.  But, it can be broken down into these parts (using the example above): VEN_10DE indicates VENdor (manufacturer) 10DE, which I know is NVIDIA.  DEV_00E2, when combined with VEN_10DE, obviously means that it’s the AGP GART (we know this because it’s already named).

So, if you see a lot of devices in there with generic names (such as PCI standard PCI-to-PCI Bridge), look at the Device ID, and if you see VEN_10DE in many of them, it likely means that they have an NVIDIA chipset.  If you see no entry that has a name containing AGP (or it will contain the words PCI Express Root for PCI Express chipsets), then their chipset driver is not installed, and they’re probably not getting full performance out of their system.  (Note that some systems that are all PCI with no AGP or PCI Express won’t show this, and this would be expected.)

You can apply this knowledge of the VEN_xxxx value to the Device ID of other devices such as the video and sound cards.  Here is a list of some of the popular brands:

VEN_10DE = NVIDIA

VEN_1002 = ATI

VEN_8086 = Intel (including SoundMax and ADI/Analog Devices for integrated sound)

VEN_1102 = Creative Labs

VEN_1106 = VIA

VEN_1039 = SiS

The DirectX Components Section

This is just information about the various files that make up the DirectX suite.  It is usually of no importance.  However, if you see that a file is missing or corrupt, it will show in here, and if it’s also mentioned in the DxDiag Notes section, then it would be best to reinstall the latest version of DirectX.

The DirectShow Filters Section

This section is another very important section.  It is broken down into several sub-sections, but the DirectShow Filters sub-section is the one that is most important.  A “DirectShow Filter” is the DirectX way of saying CODEC.

Here is an excerpt from the readme.rtf file that comes with my CODEC Reset Utility version 2.0 (available at http://nightmare2013.brashendeavors.net):

(CODEC = COder/DECoder; they're essentially plug-ins that allow your computer to understand and create the various audio and video file formats.)  Unlike most other games I've seen, Morrowind makes use of CODECs to view its Bink video files (such as the opening cinematics) and some of the sounds and background music.  If there is a CODEC installed on your computer that causes problems for Morrowind, then Morrowind will either play the media file (sometimes with stuttering), or it will crash to the desktop (CTD), either immediately when trying to play the file or some time afterward.  Most often, it will CTD just as it's finishing the Initializing Data phase after loading the plug-ins.

Unfortunately, there is no real concrete list of CODECs that are proven to cause problems for Morrowind.  Well, there is a list, but it’s not very descriptive, and we don’t know what versions of the files are causing the problem.  Here’s the best list I can come up with:

Morgan Stream Switcher, mmswitch.ax (no version information).  Reference: An error message about mmswitch.ax appears when starting Morrowind.

Elecard MPEG2 Video Decoder (no file or version information).  Reference: I am getting an Active Movie error message in Morrowind.

Mega Codec Pac (no specific name, no file or version information; probably referring to ACE Mega CodecS Pack or K-Lite Mega Codec Pack).  Reference: I am getting an Active Movie error message in Morrowind.

Intervideo Audio, iviaudio.ax (no version information).  Reference: Morrowind is crashing the desktop when the "Initializing Data" message appears.

Pinnacle video editing software (no version information; not sure exactly which file(s) is/are affecting it).  Reference:  Freezing Loading Screen (forum)

Lee Carre came up with a good way to get rid of any audio problems in Morrowind.  This is applicable if you’re getting errors about being unable to play “morrowind title.mp3” or any other mp3 file it mentions.

Lee Carre: start menu, settings, control panel
opened "sounds and audio devices"
went to the "hardware" tab and selected "audio codecs" (about half way down the list)
clicked "properties" at the bottom of the tab
on the "audio codecs properties" window, went to the "properties" tab
on the "properties" tab a list of codecs was displayed (i assume all the ones i have installed, i can list them here if requested)
i found one that looked most like an mp3 codec (it's called "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec") and selected it (so it was highlighted)
i clicked the "properties" button at the bottom of the tab
in the window for the properties of the codec (hope you're following all these "properties" windows ;)- this one has options to use/not use the codec and to change the priority) i changed the priority to "1", then clicked "OK"
now, a strange thing windows seems to do, that i discovered from past experience, is when you change the priority of a codec, for some reason, it becomes disabled (the "don't use the audio codec" option is selected), so, make sure the "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec" is selected, and click "properties" again to re-open the options box
in the codec properties box (again), leave the priority at "1" and select "use this audio codec"
click "OK" again
click "OK" for "audio codecs properties"
and "OK" for "sounds and audio devices

once that was done i didn't need to restart for morrowind to play music,, character voices, and sounds etc., however, the experience of other users may be different
